Small Pleasures

On days like these you really have to take pleasure in the small things, for example, this story that my pal told me about a little black cat named Charlie in the UK. One day he jumped into a local post man's bag to escape the rain outside and for several weeks now, has been faithfully accompanying him on his daily post rounds. Real sweet eh? This is Charlie, and little things like this make me remember that life isn't all wet and cold and miserable:

BUT SERIOUSLY WHEN WILL IT END?!

The Ballad of Sexual Dependency

Nan Goldin is my new obsession. Not in a wierd way, but in a i'm-in-love-with-your photos-and-they-sometimes-make-me-laugh-or-cry kind of way. She is a wonderful photographer from New York via Boston who is probably best known for her documentation of New York post-punk culture of the late 70's and into the 80's, though her work spans four deacades and examines a wide variety of subject matter. What makes her work particularly appealing to me is that her subject matter is her life; her friends, her relationships and all their various vices play central roles in her work. There is also an inherently tragic element to looking at her early works, whose incredibly vibrant subjects were mostly all lost by the 90's to drug overdoses or HIV/AIDS.

Her works often show people at their most vulnerable and desperate moments, looking tragic, but also kinda beautiful because of the extreme honesty of her photos. After looking through many of her books and slideshows, subjects become familiar to you, lovers come and go and addictions take hold then subside. The saddest part is watching the evolution of Nan's self portraits and seeing the deaths of her loved ones and their tragic lifestyles.

I adore Nan's use of photography in its most raw form - she never uses digital editing, and barely understood the relationship between light and the camera for a long stretch, as a huge portion of her life was literally lived underground, staying up all night, in bars and dingy clubs of New York. In her words: "I gave a lecture last May, and I asked how many people still think a photograph can be real, and out of 150 people I think five raised their hand. And that's the whole reason I started taking photos: to make a record against revisionism, against any one revising my life or what I saw." - Nan.

Female to Female

We have started buying for Fall/Winter 09, and boy oh boy does it feel like a long time away. Every season we try and bring in pieces that you will fall over for, but until we see the collections we can only hope for vibes to come through. I can't help but imagine all the possibilities our designers will present to us. Right now i am really feeling remnants from the past and discos...

Though this may be what I am always into... who needs original thought, I am not the one designing after all!

This Ilk

This Ilk, lace earrings
Montreal-based designer Tamara Bavdek began crafting jewellery from her bedroom in early 2008. Her unique, intricate creations soon became the covet of those around her, and she went from selling out of a shoebox at parties to supplying to trendy boutiques. All This Ilk products are made by hand, with love.

This Ilk, lace earrings

Vintage lace never looked so good! And with prices varying between $30-$35, you can wear them recklessly or dainty-style...whatever floats your boat. But I would bet there are a lot more mess-y nights in your future then afternoon tea parties.

But of course I ain't no fortune teller.

Better come in fast, cause between us gals here, we might buy them all up!

Shred It!

shredded tee, fashion toast
Though I have never been to SoCal, have been on a skateboard only a few times, and scoff at most snowboarders when I'm skiing, these wicked Shredded tees make me want to get on a board and fake it. There is something about their attitude that makes me want to chill with 'boarders at a hardcore show... And just you know, hang ten (too bad I lack the skillz).

Keep on keeping on!

It is clear at this point that we will all in fact survive another winter. Thank god spring, and more importantly spring clothing deliveries are right around the corner. It is hard not to dream of how AMAZING it will be:

Cut it out

'Cut out' art amazes me because it is something we have all done at one point (snow flakes, people garland) and yet we never took it to the next level, mostly due to the fact that your pieces probably sucked as hard as mine. Mine always looked liked like the child who made it is surely too young to safely be using scissors...

ANYWAYS, some people like Rob Ryan and Nikki McClure, totally rule at cut-outs. Their pieces are so technically amazing and pretty, bringing me to gasp and ahhhhh. Today I stumbled upon Wilhelm Steahle and his Silhouette Masterpiece Theater. Love it!

Velo Vogue

With the long walks we've all been subject to with this bus strike, it's been hard not to miss your bike. We here at Victoire sure have been. It was definitely the perfect time to spend a night admiring and cheering for our favorite combination: cuties on bikes. And that is exactly what Velo Vogue was all about.

On Saturday night at the new location of Tall Tree Cycles, Nancy Kukurudz organized one heck of a fashion show highlighting wicked bikes and great clothes brought to you by many local shops including Victoire. Here are some pictures of our models. We really hope we can participate in the next one and be part of the movement to bring dresses and heels to all bike riders!
