Tiny Vices

One of my favourite artists right now is New York's Aurel Schmidt. I found her on the previously blogged about Skullset -- Jack Siegel's photo blog.

Schmidt's art is all death and debauchery. Her pieces are wistful and dreamy, but upon closer examination, one can see that every crevice contains detailed drawings of house flies, cigarette butts, maggots and other unmentionables.

Above is one of my favourites, entitled Maneater. Below is an installation piece called Deep Throat which is one of Shasha's favourites.

More of Aurel's art can be seen here or watch her being interviewed on VBS TV here.

MINKPINK

Here are some ultra-hip new styles from MinkPink that are already flying off the shelves like crazy. And with styles like the 'Donna' cami, you know that these gals are serious about their love for the nineties (as are we)!

I like them best with Doc Martens and wild hair, but they really do go just as well with high heels and an updo! Well done Mink Pink.
Last night I was doing some good catching up on blog-land. It had been a while, but I finally caught up with a few of my regulars - Rumi, Susie, Michelle & probably my favourite, Tavi.

Talking about Tavi is a totally natural segway from the last "Smart Girls at the Party" post. Though if she had a show, it would probably be called "Genius Girls in the Fashion Blog-o-sphere". Her blog is one of the funniest, funnest & well-writtenest (this one isn't). Oh yeah um, and she's 13.

Rodarte tights
Anyways, I started to freak out, because if you've been following her blog at all, you'll know that she's developed a friendship with the epically talented Mulleavy sisters behind Rodarte. They made her a custom pair of those amazing cobwebby tights to fit her tiny 13-year old legs.

Anyways, the amazing fashion fairytale continues with Tavi going to L.A. and actually visiting the sisters in their studio, whereby she presents them with a zine she made and shows them a few of her favourite etsy sellers - one of them being Norwegian Wood! Angie had also collaborated with Tavi on a custom piece, one of her super sought-after cage skirts. To add to all this amazingness, in Tavi's zine, there's a sketch of Angie in one of her harnesses. I wish a cool 13 year-old wanted to sketch me!

Anyhow, it just made me giddy with excitement that someone so talented as Angie is getting the exposure she deserves. We're always floored by her creativity and you never know what she could be working on next. Here's a sampling of what we've currently got in the shop of hers:

Being a Girl is so AWESOME!

This whole site, Smart girl at the party is amazing, so you have to spend your rainy morning on it. It will leave you feeling so good. All I want to do is get my BFFs together and have a radical time (maybe do a long postponed punxercise practise....)

Always be yourself x a million!

Under the Weather

Since the weather outside ain't co-operating with our inside theme of floral sundresses and all things summer in general, I thought I would pull some nice cottony rainy day gear. Though these comfy pieces don't immediately stand out on the racks for me, they are often the things which I get the most wear out of and go back to every season. I imagine this with some nice rubber boots, a big umbrella and lots of coffee to keep you perky even though you wanna sleep and not wake up until actual summer weather is here.

Lily and Jae Dance Dress for 120 bucks

Dace Roh Pullover for 150 bucks.

Sha Sha Vintage Bag ( big enough for an umbrella!) for 29 bucks.

And Clair C. Feather Headwrap worn as neclace for 30 bucks.

And voila, I believe 'cozy chic' is the right name for this look!

Rain, rain GO AWAY!!

We are all torn up inside over mother nature stealing our summer! Give us sun, warm nights and a reason to wear all the pretty summer clothes!! That is all we really want, but while the rain is falling, best to TRY and make the best of it. For us that means calming our hearts with new Domino jeans. Made in Montreal, these jeans really exemplify our TORN-UP mode.

Nokomis Yarrow camisole, $120
Domino jeans, $126

We are also so excited for the Little Treasures sale on June 13! Here is a sneak peak of a little guy we are parting with:

Teenage Super Party

Every summer there are a handful of CDs that are on constant rotation at the shop/in the car/in my house. Last summer it was definitely MGMT & ABBA (you can thank Mamma Mia for that!) So far this summer the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs, No Bunny and Wavves are making the cut.

Erin is a Beach Demon in this LnE dress, 180$

Velour is pretty much the uniform of any self-respecting Summer Goth. 115$

*It goes without saying that Fleetwood Mac, Beyonce & Dolly Parton are in heavy rotation YEAR-ROUND, obvs.

Whatever Works

There is something about neurotic, hypochondriac jewish comedians that I really dig. Jerry Seinfeld, Jonathan Goldstein and Woody Allen all hold special places in my heart, and I am really excited for Woody Allen's new film called Whatever Works. Its protagonist is played by Larry David, another favourite of mine, and seems to channel all the lovable neuroses of a younger Allen. Here is the trailer:

Unfortunately, I find Evan Rachel Wood a boring choice for the female lead. In my humble opinion she's got nothing on some of his classic muses such as Mia Farrow, Diane Keaton, Muriel Hemmingway or even the more contemporary Penelope Cruz. Oh well, you can't win em all.

Hot Rod

Last Thursday, we went on a real summer adventure. We packed the car up with beautiful clothes from the store, a delicious picnic, our beautiful pals Sage and Erin, and the extraordinary Paul Galipeau. We went out to the closest we have ever been to paradise: an old farm house tucked away in the rolling hills, with streams and a meadow. Old farm equipment and barns were sprinkled across the estate, as well as some newer gems that would have had my daddy drooling: Camaros!

Little Treasures Sale

This morn' I totally blew it for THREE YEARS IN A ROW (grrrr) and slept in too late to make it to the Great Glebe Garage Sale. Bummer.
Anyhow, it reminded me that we are going to have our very own little sale at the store. Katie, Reg and us shopgals will be selling lots of great stuff, including but not limited to the following:
Clothes (tons of dresses!)
Shoes
Books
Trinkets

It will all take place on Saturday June 13th from 11-5, and you can expect some yummy treats as well as lots of very reasonably priced goodies! Remember, it's going to be very low-tech so we will only be accepting cash($$$)at the sale.

We will also be posting some sneak peaks of items for sale in the next few weeks, so stay tuned for that.

And please come: it would make us all sooo happy!

Summer Fun

Last week we recieved our second Dace shipment for summer and, needless to say, I was super excited. It all just screams summer picnics and lying around in the grass and eating popsicles and generally chillin'. Actually, I just watched a short film called High Falls with Maggie Gyllenhaal, and she could have been a postergirl for Dace SS09, pairing oversized cuffed shirts with short shorts and Wellington boots and braided hair. It was awesome!

Here are some new styles and reorded styles back by popular demand:

Dace Bawa shorts
Bawa Short Shorts for $120

Dace Penner dress

Dace Pelletier dress

Chateau Gateau!

A new addition to the Victoire family this month are the fab ladies at Chateau Gateau. These ladies are not only superstars at jewellery making (one is the brains behind Roadkill), and vintage revamping (the other designs and creates Supayana ), but they can also make one hell of a lip balm!

Their glorious smelling lip balms, body butters and candles are all hand made with love in Montreal. In addition, their candles are soy based and come in the most beautiful vintage teacups, and their cosmetics are all filled with yummy essential oils for the most natural smells. Flavours include Rose Mint, Chocolate Mint, Lemon Meringue and Key Lime Pie. Plus, for $4-$15 a pop, how can you resist?
