My daddy didn't love me enough to build me one

Until the snow comes for real (this morning was only a small taste of it), we can dream of having one of these incredible abodes. Unlike snow castles they don't melt and your butt doesn't get soggy from sitting too long. Though no built in cooler...so pros and cons.

Obsessions:

It looks so beautiful and dreamy and yet I am completely unable to acertain any facts about it's plot, if it's playing anywhere near by or if it's on DVD etc. Somebody please tell me more!

Ok fine, i'm pretty sure this is not the 'official' video but who really cares when the fake video involves kittens playing. Love this song!

Have a wise and proper holiday!

Wise & Proper is always a crowd pleaser. Whether you're going to the in-laws or on a Friday night date, these pieces are sure to leave you feeling beautiful but not over done. They are also made out of super super soft material. And cozy is always the best gift you can give yourself!

Wise and Proper, $128
Doesn't Jess look adorable in this jersey dress? Her ancesters sure think so!

Wise & Proper, $138
This dress comes with a tone on tone belt, but a girl that has such a flare for vintage has got to pair it with a little piece of old-timey.

Wise & Proper, $82
The room Jess is in started as a giant beautiful closet and then got converted into an office for her to do her school work in. Man school really does ruin everything!

Wise & Proper, $192

Pretty lady! Well that brings to an end our glimps into Jess's house and her mad modeling skills. Thanks for being so cool! And as we said yesturday: You rule, please be our co-worker!

this grass IS greener

A few weeks ago we went over to visit the coolest mom we know's house. While there we roped Jessica into playing fashion model for the day. She was a great sport and our amateur photography skills do no justice to Jessica's hotness, amazing sense of humour and effortless ease. She really is so cool, we are constantly trying to scheme a way to convince her to join the Victoire team. You all would fall in love with her! She rules, which makes us envy everything around her, her house is a dream, her man is hilarious and her baby cannot be beat. Envying a kid... now that is low!

In grade 4 the coolest girl in my tap class was named Jessica and man she was tops. She had a blossom hat, a really neat vest and her mom let her put 'Sun-In' in her hair, so cool. Part of my brain thinks this is the same Jessica. Well she might as well be, except mom-Jessica was probably already going to Slayer concerts, riding the city bus alone and allowed to stay up for SNL ( I didn't even know these were possibilities in grade 4).

As you can see Jessica should be a professional decorator. Her house is straight out of a magazine. The coolest part about her decorating skills is that it is almost entirely vintage and her man can scavenge anything for rock bottom price. A perfect duo!

We took lots of pictures, tomorrow we will show you this mamas' mad modelling skills.

Time Of The Season

I was raised on the East Coast and Fall was a big deal in my small town. I would get pretty excited for the Fall Fair. There was a midway, a parade, and a tractor pulling competition! It was also duck hunting season. Later on, everyone with a wood stove would get their winter wood delivery (which totally sucked because you would have to stack it all behind your house and it took forever). My all time favorite part of late Fall was Midnight Madness. It was an evening where the businesses downtown (all 20 of them) would stay open late and everyone would run around, drink cider and get started on their holiday shopping.

Tomorrow night the businesses on Dalhousie street are putting on something quite similar. From 6-9 there will be drinks, treats, and deals! Come join in. I can personally guarantee some good eats at Victoire (Katie and M.C made some cute and mouthwatering mini-cupcakes).
Getting your holiday shopping out of the way is a good idea. It will free you up to enjoy the winter season when the snow hits!

Ice Fishing (If you're into it)

"I prefer to open the conversation with light banter about my wardrobe and jewelry."

Despite the fact that Canadian Tire begins to run Christmas commercials at the stroke of midnight on October 31st, I still feel the lack of interest to begin decorating my house for the holidays. Maybe it's because snow has yet to make an appearance in our city, or maybe it's just because I can't even begin to think about pulling out my collection of stuffed animals wearing Santa hats with the amount of laundry that has piled in my closet. Either way, right now, the only decorating i want to do is of myself. It is much easier to adorn yourself with sparkly, lacy things then it is a house. And with these Thisilk earrings, I guarantee you will give most Christmas Trees a run for their money.

Thisilk lace earrings $26-$32

Don't forget, this Wednesday from 6-9 pm come down to Dalhousie St. for our Shopping Night. Eleven stores along the street are taking part by bringing you drinks and treats and prizes and of course, shopping! Also, in true holiday and community spirit, all the stores will be collecting new, unwrapped gifts for the women and children of St. Joe's Women's Centre. Can't wait to see you Wednesday night!

A++

I've been having some really A+ Saturday nights this fall and last night did not disappoint. It all started with some friendly boozin' at the Royal Oak with Mandi from Auntie Loo's treats, Regine, and M.C. Afterwards, we headed out to Swizzles night club to judge round two of Ottawa's Drag Idol. It was a blast! If you like having a good time, can appreciate a good high kick or two, then this is the event for you (rhyme intended)! I believe the next round of Drag Idol will take place at Swizzles on December 5th. I will definitely be there. Later on in the evening we all headed to Babylon for an Ipod Battle. There was a lot of dancing, shouting, silly string, and beer spraying. Hella fun. Congratulations to team Drunk Dad Karaoke for taking home the title of champion. The night ended, as all good nights do, at ESD for poutines!!!

Inspired by all the great performances of Ottawa's finest in drag, I have compiled a short list of my personal drag idols.

More Gore!

Last night we went to see the one and only Ottawa screening of Lee Demarbre's newest flick Smash Cut at the Mayfair, where said director has been doing some kick ass programming since taking over the theatre earlier this year. The turn out was incredible; a line up around the entire block to get in and about the same to get some much needed cold ones (so we bought in threes to save time!!) and the crowd was the best kind of rowdy!

It is so much fun to see films that are made in Ottawa, especially one with so many familiar faces in them! Just as i'm trying to figure out where I recognize a face from, it promptly gets it's eyeballs cut out or loses both of it's hands to a large and sharp kitchen knife!

David Hess is hysterical in the role of Able Whitman and Sasha Grey is delightfully campy in her role of snoopy reporter turned gore film star who saves the day. AND she keeps all her clothes on!

It was mostly amazing to see the theatre completely packed to the brim with people hooting and hollering through the whole movie and cheering their pals on as they get cut to pieces by Hess.

Due to some kind of distribution contract kerfoofle the film will only available for public screenings in Germany and France but will probably be available on DVD here pretty soon. You should rent it and Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter together for a amazing night of Ottawa gore!

And check out the Mayfair for more great cult classics, must sees, independant and generally kick ass films!

It's raining cause God is crying.

Cold rain-y Friday night, what better way to spend it then with a great movie and a BIG bowl of spaghetti and red sauce.

May we suggest:

Though I may need to get super drunk and dance away my sadness after Oprah's announcement... I can't even talk about it yet.

just fur-ious.

So the other day I was walking by a secondhand store close to my place of residence and out of the corner of my eye I spotted something that was a caramel-tanny colour and somewhat resembled my friends pet mancoon. Low and behold it was a beautiful, cozy, uber soft fur hat. I went bezerkers right there in the middle of the street because lately it has seemed difficult to find the perfect fur item at second hand stores (i think because everyone is catching on as to how wonderful fur is, see below.) So obviously i make my way into the store and just as i turn to snatch the hat out of the window a woman takes it from right in front of me! Should i have been less obvious about how cool it was? Did she catch my greedy, coveting vibes? Either way i continued to follow her around the store until she left, just to see if she would change her mind (she didn't). But hey guess what?! If you are in the same situation as me and wanting something totally fur-ocious to wear this winter, you my dears, are in luck. Victoire is totally vibing you because we have fur, fur and more at the store right now. Hats, collars and hand warmers that are called muffs?

Pros of Fur (of the vintage variety):

  • Revamps your old coat, just by adding a simple collar or scarfy thing.
  • If it's fluffy enough you can surround your entire face into it and stay icicle free during those windy winter days.
  • Also if it's fluffy enough you can bury your entire face in it and hide from someone you don't want to talk to, it's like a portable VIP room!
  • If your condo doesn't allow pets, you can at least pretend. Just don't let anyone see you with your hat on a leash...
  • If you meet one of the hot, topless (yet hairy when transformed) werewolves from Twilight:New Moon you can compare furs!

Belle of the office party

We know that office parties are often problematic: you aren't used to cutting loose with the people you work with and it's hard to know if you really want to show your co-workers your weekend self. But holding everything back leads to a party where everyone is:

And we know you would rather finish the night off like this:

Now we can't help you decide if your mantra for the night should be "Martini, Martini, Martini", if you should bring the husband or the boyfriend or even if your 8 year old is old enough to babysit herself. BUT, we can help you with the wardrobe question. We have lots of great holiday dresses, and luckily enough we have two discount filled shoppping parties coming up: November 25th and December 9th from 6pm to 9pm.

So take an extra long coffee break and get a taste for what we have on the webstore! But remember its only a very small sample, you got to come in to see it all.

business in the front, party in the back

House of Spy Plunge dress, 110$

Alot of you are coming in these days looking for those perfect office party dresses, and we know it's a tough nut to crack. You want to give everyone at work a glimpse of your cool week-end self (she dances on tables in tap shoes at the slightest goading, wears a fur coat with short-shorts) but you do still have to see these people at work on Monday.

House of Spy Brazen dress, 110$

I've come up with what I think is a perfect solution to this conundrum. I call it the Mini Wheats dichotomy, but you probably know it better as the mullet mantra - business in the front, party in the back. Or in the Mini Wheats case, healthy on one side, delicious and covered in sugar and sass on the other. It's a METAPHOR! (I watched too much 30 Rock this week-end).

House of Spy Lisette dress, 220$

Unlike this online petition which is trying to urge Kellogg's to make Mini Wheats with frosting on both sides (which is just totally bonkers), I think you can have too much of a good thing. So keep it classy in the front, and a tad lewd in the back. (Does anyone else think using the word "classy" in and of itself is super un-classy? I think so too. Which is why I can't seem to stop using that word lately!)

Valérie Dumaine Jean dress, 155$

C'est La Vie

I am still recovering from my awesome, jam-packed weekend. I also woke up early after a Saturday night of music and mayhem (see post below) to attend the Ottawa Vintage Sale. It was so great! Did you find any great treasures? I'd love to hear about them! Personally, I scored some great tan boots. If you couldn't find any vintage jewellery to suit your needs don't worry. We just got a new shipment of reconstructed vintage jewels from Salvage Designs. Take a look!

Can we get a new camera boss lady?

Our camera is broken, so we can't take any new pictures. Total bummer, but I think I can tell you all about our weekend using old pictures. Here goes:

Saturday night we took advantage of that fact that:

And went both to watch the boxing match (Go Manny for life!) and see some righteous gals rock out in the hottest room I have ever been in.

Then we woke up at the crack of dawn and went hunting:

(plaid top-hunting, clever clever gal for monday morning... Mink Pink, $95)

We were looking for treasures, and saw alot of you doing the same.

We found lots of little things to make our store even cuter, 'cause like botox once you start the cute process it is never ending!

Then we met new friends from Apt 613 and had fun. But by this point we were so tired that all we really wanted to do was crawl in bed beside this gal:

and watch endless hours of 'King of the Crown'.

We wish Jessica could come to our party next Wednesday. She is so silly and fun to get tipsy with, which is all we plan to do on the 25th. Well that and give out discounts!

We Don't Have to Pretend

Francesca Woodman's self portraits evoke such strong emotions that it's hard to believe she printed them all before the age of 22. Examining such images as resurrection, crucifixion, vulnerability and invisibility, her work really speaks to the pains of being a young woman. I think that everyone can relate to the overwhelming melancholic feel of these at some point in their life, which is probably why almost three decades after her untimely death her photos are still treasured by so many.
